This KIAX softphone can work only with Linux OS and as you can conclude from the name of the program only IAX users can be registered with it. To download the phone go to http://sourceforge.net/projects/kiax and download the distribution you want. There you can find the installation versions for Debian, RedHat, SuSe and Tilix Linux distributions as well as an installation from source. To use the phone we suppose that you have already had an Asterisk PBX configured and working.
Lets install the KIAX for Debian. The file is named kiax_0.8.4-1debian_i386.deb so you will install it with typing dpkg -i kiax_0.8.4-1debian_i386.deb.
Note: If you want to install KIAX from source you have to go to the directory where the source is stored and type ./configure then make and finally make install.
REGISTERING AN USER
if you are using KDE and you want to use this softphone note the following: before running the phone you have to stop the ARTS sound server. If ARTS is not stopped the phone cannot initialize its devices.
The phone looks like this:
To register an user in KIAX you have to register it first on Asterisk. For example I will register an IAX user in iax.conf named "iax_linux" with password "iax_linux", dynamic IP and join it to the "linux_test" context.
I will also register an extension in extensions.conf on Asterisk for this user in order to be dialed. So when 1111 is dialed user iax_linux will be contacted.
For more information about how to make the configurations in the Asterisk's configuration files please read our tutorial about the Configuring IP Phones for use with Asterisk
Now you are ready to register an user on your phone. Just go to File/Settings on the phone’s menu. Type some account name. In IAX Server field type the IP address of your Asterisk server. Type the username registered on Asterisk in iax.conf and the user’s secret in the password field. Preferred codec is better to be GSM or U-Law. Then save the changes.
Leave the other settings as set by default. And now the phone is ready to use.

cjk (cjk at swooke dot com) 06 October 2008 23:27:15 Just a small note. Forschung Direkt has jsut released the new KIAX 2.0. It is of course opensource and runs on Linux, Windows and Macintosh.
I just tested the softphone from <a href="http://www.mixvoip.com">MIXvoip</a> which is based on kiax. They have integrated the signup process in a very user friendly way. I hope they release a small howto soon so that other voip services could use this.
Kiax lacks some features that zoiper has already but nevertheless it is a good softphone.

Ampi (sarahlumbreras at gmail dot com) 15 October 2006 16:32:31 I'm trying to use Kiax making calls through Voipbuster (just as nikitas stamatopoulos) but I can't get the audio working. I have FC4 and I am pretty new, anybody any idea?
I still can listen to music and also skype works, just Kiax doesn't, maybe I miss something basic...
Andreas Kaiser (aka at nurfuerspam dot de) 06 September 2006 23:38:12 The first sentence "This KIAX softphone can work only with Linux OS ..." isn't correct IMHO. There is a Windows binary too (I hope it will work with my linux *).

Erick Tyack (etyack at acurrus dot com) 24 February 2006 14:14:43 Hello,
I would like to run Idefisk on a LTSP (Linux Terminal Server Project www.ltsp.org) thin client. When I attempt to start the downloadable binary it fails complaining libstcd++6 is not found. LTSP provides a build environment and I would like to build Idefisk from source. Do you provide source code?
Thank you for your time.
Regards,
Erick
emo (emosto at source dot forge dot dot dot com) 09 February 2006 12:43:08 md5 authorization should work now. the new kiax 0.8.5 uses patch for iaxclient to allow md5 working ok on amd64.give it a try and I will be happy to get some feedback.
greetings,

anon (a at b dot c) 08 February 2006 01:40:04 I had the same failed MD5 authentication errors. Converting the password to an md5 has (using ruby or perl or some other scripting language) and then setting md5secret to that in iax.conf (instead of secret=plaintextpwd) fixed the problem here.
Roman (roman at 121media dot com) 07 January 2006 18:47:16 Doesnt work for me, keeps saying: Jan 7 12:48:03 NOTICE[19980]: chan_iax2.c:5121 register_verify: Host 81.179.236.93 failed MD5 authentication for 'iax_test' (6b948da6ead42569760819d3c35a1896 != 6aa919e319c9e5631c9d1c9404bebef4)
nikitas stamatopoulos (nstamato at gmail dot com) 01 December 2005 20:12:02 I am using kiax to make phone calls in europe and the states(for free!) through voipbuster. I am using Xandros (with KDE) and everything works fine. You just need to create an account at voipbuster.com (which unfortunately requires you to download the program for windows and register an account there) and then use iax.voipbuster.com as the iax server along with the username and password you registered with. Sound is good, a little worse than the windows version, but still usable.
McKay (pezboy11 at yahoo dot com) 06 November 2005 18:56:22 I have Kiax installed on my Ubuntu Breezy system (using KDE). I have bought some credit from iax.cc and am trying to use it but have come up short. Using Kiax people can dial my phone number and it will ring, but it will not do voicemail. Also any time I try to make an outgoing call Kiax closes down.
