I am curious if the Lucent Winmodem drivers are at a "functional" state, as I
need to replace my voice mail system soon and Asterisk looks like a wonderful
solution. The web page also does not make it clear if Asterisk can handle
multiple (or any) a "standard" phone as an extension, is this possible?

THe lucent winmodem drivers aren't close to functional yet. Among other
things, the linmodem stuff doesn't support RING detection. There have
been a few mumblings about that on the list, but no code yet, and I'm not
going to invest the time in the driver until there's some code.
THeoretically you could use an Internet LineJack to connect, but they're
expensive.
The Internet PhoneJack is the best way to hook up real phones at this
point if you're looking for very small #'s of ports, otherwise your best
bet for large #'s of ports is the Adtran hardware.
When I get back to the states, I'll be receiving an ISDN card, and that
may make another nice telephony interface fr phone lines.

How do I get CVS access to the newest revisions of Asterisk?
It's on the web page. set your CVSROOT to
:pserver:anoncvs@marko.net:/usr/share/cvsroot and the password is
"anoncvs"

I have a genuine Rockwell full duplex voice modem, but asterisk just stalls
on start up when it tries to initialize the modem. Any suggestions?
Run minicom on the modem first to know if linux sees it alright. Then,
exit minicom wiwth Ctrl-A Q so that minicom leaves the serial port at the
right baud rate, etc -- At this point Asterisk doesn't do any
initialization on the serial port.
Further, even if you rmodem says "full duplex speakerphone" that does not
mean that the AT commands support full duplex. According to the
documentation I have, any transmission will interrupt receiving voice from
the modem, meaning that the AT command set is half-duplex only. For now I
just don't implement the "transmit" part in the modem code yet.
Whenever the lucent winmodem (reverse engineered) driver supports RING
detection, that channel should be full duplex -- but right now the driver
(www.linmodems.org) does not support RING detection and is thus basically
useless.

When is the next major release of Asterisk going to be available? (What is
the current one?)
The current one is 0.1.1 and 0.1.2 will be available shortly -- maybe
today. If you have a full duplex *sound card* you should be able to test
out the PBX with this release.
