For the first time, I was able to place a call into my PBX (and then out
the Atlas) and check my answering machine in Auburn while I am in Egypt.
While IAX (Inter Asterisk eXchange) still is not ready (it lacks jitter
compensation, which is just stubbed), it was good enough for this call to
work. I wanted to give a brief explanation of what IAX is, and why I used
it.
1. What is IAX?
IAX stands for Inter-Asterisk eXchange, and is a Voice over IP (VoIP)
protocol designed to link Asterisk PBX's together over the Internet.
2. Why not OpenH323?
H323 is a very complex protocol with very different goals from IAX. While
H.323 is still a target channel for future development, it did not appear
to optiminally fit the needs that IAX does.
3. What's so special about IAX?
A lot of things actually.
a) Very light-weight. Payload has only 4 bytes of header, far
smaller than RTP
b) IAX integrates command functions easily and transparently,
better for work with connecting channels across Asterisk
c) Authentication mechanisms are built into IAX allowing both IP
and password (cleartext or chap-style challenges) authentication
d) Adaptive jitter compensation (not yet implemented) will
maintain a seamless stream of packets with minimal latency.
Anyway, I'd be glad to field any other questions you have about IAX or
Asterisk. Wish me luck on the jitter compensation. Hopefully when jitter
compensation comes along, I can go ahead and release 0.1.2

The jitter compensation is slowly coming a long. The one good thing about
being here in Egypt with a bad net connection is that it gives me a great
test platform for my IAX protocol :)
I will be back Jan 8th. Of course, if you want to send the card before
then you can, I have an employee who can receive it for me. Otherwise you
can send it and ask that it be delivered anytime after that.

Sounds great, I hope we all do :)
And of course, as soon as I get it working I look forward to making all
the calls in Germany I want through you over the Internet.
