Come on,

The reason that asterisk is not succeeding is directly because there is no
documentation. Can't any of you geeks understand that? If you look at the
Ciscos of the world you will find that all and I mean all of their products
are installed into the general business population of the world.

If you geeks think that all NORMAL people speak geek language well buddies you
are in for a rude awakening. We go fishing, play sport, go to dinner with
our wives, go dancing and many other things but never play computers or geek
games.

If you want to get Asterisk of the ground and that is where it is at, then get
the general population involved and the only way is to get some understanding
out there via documentation and I mean general documentation else stay
playing your little non important geek games.

Best of luck.

What you are seeing is very similar to the evolution of the Internet. It
will take a few years before the barriers to entry are lowered. This is
primarily because most people only talk about what needs to be done; very
few actually do anything.

You are ironically posting this on the list where the participants have
probably contributed more to the doc effort than anyone else. Even I
have proof read the first edition of The Book a thousand times, that was
my main contribution :)

The list is for people who contribute to this documentation effort and I
politely suggested that the writer ask questions on the asterisk-users
list which is for that type of question. No one really minds that
posters don't realize this, especially those in non-English speaking
countries, but the fact is the list is so quite if we didn't point
people to the better sources, they'd get no response here for days or
even weeks.

There is no lack of sources of information and I should have mentioned
the http://voip-info.org wiki as well as the location of old and new
books done by the members of this list, at http://asteriskdocs.org

It was a few years and in that intervening time many other ideas failed before
the internet succeeded. Only the geeks can make Asterisk work in the
technical arena but they also need to document in laymans language the HOW
TOs else all will fail as per the many other ideas during the internet period
but telling Ganash "To go away and leave us geeks alone" is not the way to do
it. Help him and help others and all will work and that will beat the
Ciscos.

What I am seeing is that you guys are (mostly) still alive! :) This is
about the quietest list in the civilized world.

Since you mention the evolution of the net, Jim, ("damn it Jim, I'm just
a country doctor, not a programmer") the web has very much become a huge
collaborative project; post your photos, your videos, your life and your
geeky software for all to see and comment on. There's already a preety
consequential amount of data on asterisk, but not centralized except for
the wiki which, as we all know, is spotty in its coverage.

But he wasn't told that - he was told to ask his question somewhere it
will get a better answer. Questions like his are dealt with in the
-users list all the time.

Have you seen this?

http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/onlamp/2003/07/03/asterisk.html

http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/onlamp/2004/01/22/asterisk2.html

These were the first two pages I read on asterisk, just before I
discovered http://asteriskdocs.org

Please - not so much tension on the internet - it will fall over !!!

Why not try something easier to configure like AsteriskAtHome. You can
download the ISO from their website and there are a few howto to get you
going. THIS WILL DELETE EVERYTHING ON YOUR LINUX BOX TO INSTALL !

Wow, this is the first thread on this list in a long time.

Allen -- I started documenting Asterisk for people like us:

http://mph.gotdns.com:82/manual/en/

I've made a lot of progress, but things slowed due to lack of interest and
involvement on this list. I've posted several times for help, review,
etc., with no response, except from kpfleming who has answered some
doc-specific questions.

If you would like to help, I will get you svn access to the docs
repository, give you a bit of a primer on how it all works, and set you
loose on lots of projects.

If anyone else would like to get involved in the PHPDOC Asterisk project I
started and will continue with help, please reply!

There's actually plenty of documentation on Asterisk, it's simply not all
collected into one place. Even if there was one, authoritative,
comprehensive book that explained everything, people would still need to
read it. PBXs are not easy things to configure; never have been. The
complexity of a PBX is typically proportional to its flexibility, and thus
Asterisk may never be suitable to anyone who is not a tinkerer.

Projects to simplify Asterisk already exist. AMP and AAH (or whatever they
are called now) are excellent examples of people in the community working
very hard to lower the barriers to entry. Still, whenever anyone asks "what
do I do?", it suggests that they do not have a complete picture of what it
is they are getting into. The best and kindest advice, therefore, is "read,
read read". This is not elitist, it is simply the only advice that makes
sense at this stage.

Anyhow, this list is not very active because of one reason: very few people
contribute any documentation to the docs project. This list will remain
fairly silent until more of that is happening, but that does not mean that
we should allow this list to become a general asterisk questions list. That
is not it's purpose, and there are other, more suitable venues for folks who
have questions.

It was a few years and in that intervening time many other
ideas failed before the internet succeeded. Only the geeks
can make Asterisk work in the technical arena but they also
need to document in laymans language the HOW TOs else all
will fail as per the many other ideas during the internet
period but telling Ganash "To go away and leave us geeks
alone" is not the way to do it. Help him and help others and
all will work and that will beat the Ciscos.

Alan,

He was helping Ganash by pointing him to the proper forum for help. As has been mentioned several times, this list is for documentation, not support. The general asterisk-users list provides support for asterisk, so why doesn't it make sense to point him there? It's like someone asking about stereo in a forum for surround sound users. Sure, someone might be able to help you there. But it makes more sense to send him to where it's almost certain that someone will be able to help him.

Try Trixbox - makes it easier the first time. http://www.trixbox.org/
Read documentation here: http://www.trixbox.org/modules/smartsection/      http://www.trixbox.org/modules/smartsection/item.php?itemid=4
Also read voip-info.org , http://nerdvittles.com/ ,
Try looking on Google too.

Asterisk has a learning curve.  If you're not somewhat Linux savvy then you may not get it the first few tries.
