No, you don't have to have a sound card, but you need to configure
Asterisk just a bit to use your quicknet card. Unfortunately, all the
sound files for Asterisk as released are in GSM format, and due to patent
regulations I cannot release a translator to G.723.1 format, the primary
one used by the card.
Anyway, to get started, you'll first want to edit
/etc/asterisk/modules.conf and then add:
noload chan_oss.so
in the [modules] section, so that it doesn't try to
load the sound card driver.
Next, you'll want to edit phone.conf and uncomment the
"device=/dev/phone0" towards the end of that file, so that it will
actually open that device on startup. All of Asterisk can be configured
from within that file.
You may also wish to switch it to "mode=immediate" so that as soon as you
pick up the receiver you hear the welcome rather than giving you a
dialtone, but that's up to you.
Now there is still the problem that the phonejack wants to use G.723.1.
You can uncomment the "format=slinear" line, and that will in theory tell
it to use signed linear (for which a translator is included for that to
and from gsm), but i have found slinear format to cause kernel panics on
my box with the version of software i have for it.
Anyway, if I can be of further assistance, feel free to share your
problems or progress with the list.
