I installed the latest cvs today and seem to be having some problems with
SIP registration from my ATA 186. As well as loading the latest * I also
configured a FWD accounr although I can't see why this should have mucked
up registration of the local ATA 186.
I've attached the SIP trace below. The ATA 186 is named ata186.myhome.net
but this doesn't appear anywhere in the registration messages. It's I{P
address is 192.168.1.240. myhost.myhome.net is the * server. It used to
work OK. Any clues?

Sounds like you don't have a peer named "cisco" or it's not dynamic,
because we're not even giving it the chance to attempt to authenticate.

They're both configured as "friends". A "sip show peers" reported the ATA
186 interfaces (as well as the registration with FWD).
Maybe it's got something to do with the "dynamic" option. However, my ATA
186 will always have the same address - I've set DHCP up to do that - so it
seems unnecessary to designate it as dynamic. I'd assumed that
host=ata186.myhome.net would be OK since this will always resolve to the
same address which is the default address specified in sip.conf.

That's fine, but then Asterisk won't let it "register" but that shouldn't
cause any other problems. If you want it to register, you *have* to use
"host=dynamic" even if you do "defaultip=<staticip>" later.
