Is there any clients available for the voice over IP protocol
implemented in Asterisk?
Right now, Asterisk is its only client, but that's because this VoIP
protocol is really geared towards Asterisk's needs. it features:
1) Very very low overhead (4 bytes/frame for payload)
2) Authentication
3) Content negotiation, including language, extension context, and
extension.
I may modify gnophone to be an IAX client as well. For real VoIP
integration with things other than Asterisk, it will need to have a more
standard interface, like a chan_h323, for example.
Of course, now that Asterisk supports full duplex sound cards, you can run
Asterisk as a stand alone internet telephone, although it supports the
ability to do much more than just that.

Yes, to interoperate with other things it needs to be RTP based
and use either H.323 or SIP. I'd like to see it use the OpenH323
stack!
As you know, there are licensing problems with that. OpenH323 is MPL, and
is not compatible with the GPL. Even if I permit Asterisk to be linked
with it, modules of Asterisk that use other GPL'd code (like codec_mp3)
will not be able to be loaded when OpenH323 is loaded. I'm not opposed to
using OpenH323, but I'd like to see if they'd be willing to make it
available under LGPL as well as MPL.
Anyway, putting aside for the moment the licensing issues, I don't know
enough about C++ to implement the chan_h323, but if there are any C++
coders out there, I'd love to see someone write one.

I don't think that would help. Linking LGPL code againstGPL code
would still virally infect the library, as I understand it.
Incorrect, as the LGPL explicitly allows its contents to be redistributed
under GPL. That's why GPL code can always link with LGPL code, the result
being under GPL.
