i am trying to use cvs head on freebsd 6-current. i have been
using the freebsd port. the freebsd port installed in the usual,
for freebsd, /usr/local/{etc.bin,lib,...}. i can not see how
to get the bsd cvs head in pserver:anoncvs@cvs.digium.com:/usr/cvsroot
to do so without major hacking to the makefiles. is there a patch
script i am missing or something?

Unless I'm missing something here, all you need to do is edit
INSTALL_PREFIX in the top-level Makefile.
